Us, EU settle Digital Tax Dispute Washington agrees to drop retaliatory tariffs on five countries

The United States and five European governments have reached a deal to resolve a digital tax dispute involving some of the American tech giants. It follows a global agreement to reform taxes on big companies.

Under the agreement, the United States, The United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain and Austria agreed on "the transition from the existing digital services tax to a new multilateral solution," Austria's finance Ministry said in a statement on Thursday, pledging to continue discussions on the issue through constructive dialogue.

The agreement marks the end of a long-running dispute that could threaten a broader tax deal if the digital tax dispute persists. Through negotiations led by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 136 countries signed up to the global tax reform plan. World leaders are expected to ratify the agreement at the G20 summit in Rome on October 30-31.

European countries will temporarily keep a so-called digital services tax that has angered U.S. companies and government officials. If the new global tax system comes into effect in the next two years, these countries will provide tax credits that will in effect refund technology companies overpaid under the early implementation of the global tax agreement.

The United States agreed to drop retaliatory tariffs against the five European countries. Those duties had been suspended.
